[10:00am-5:00pm] Through African Eyes Family Day @ the DIA

- The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), in partnership with the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, presents a special "Through African Eyes" Family Day on Sunday, June 27 from 10 am - 5 pm. Members of the Charles H. Wright Museum can purchase tickets to the exhibition "Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500 to Present" at the discounted rate of $8 for adults, or $4 for youth ages 6 – 17, by showing their membership card.
The day will also feature an extended performance by the Ghanaian Kusun ensemble as well as a demonstration by Ghanaian artist Joye Opoku Ofei.
Activities are free with museum admission.
Artist Demonstration: Joye Opoku Ofei: Noon - 4 pm Born in Ghana, West Africa, artist and graphic designer Joye Opoku Ofei shares his rich culture through his captivating painting style.
Family Performance: Kusun: 2 pm In this special family-oriented presentation, the musicians and dancers give an exciting and educational performance with audience participation and explanations of the instruments and dances they employ.
Founded by West African percussionist Nii Tettey Tench, The Kusun Ensemble features an extraordinary group of musicians and dancers from Ghana, West Africa. Although rooted in traditional music from Ghana, the ensemble has developed a new brand of music and dance they have dubbed "Nokoko." They have created innovative rhythms and dances by fusing bass and lead guitar, electrifying jazz, African rhythms, and traditional Ghanaian instruments.
More than ten years in the making, "Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500 to Present" illustrates how African artists from diverse cultures have used and continue to use visual forms to reflect their particular societies' changing attitudes toward Europeans, as the latter evolved from stranger to colonizer to the more inclusive Westerner.
