The Washtenaw County African-American Read - In will be held on Sunday, March 7 from 3:00-5:00 in the Morris Lawrence Building at Washtenaw Community College, 4800 East Huron River Drive in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The theme of this free event for all ages is “Athletes Read.” The event will feature a keynote speaker, panelists from a variety of sports, a sports trivia contest, free books for those 18 years and under, and light refreshments.
Youngsters will be able to select a free book from a selection of books by African-American authors including sports figures.
Local athletes, including members of the Eastern Michigan University sports teams will be present!

One town. Two proms. Until now. Morgan Freeman, the Academy Award-winning actor, offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi with the condition that the prom be racially integrated. After the second request, the school board accepted his offer and history was made. Charleston High School had its first-ever integrated prom, in 2008. The film follows students, teachers, and parents in the lead-up to the big day. The film's director, Paul Saltzman, will lead the post-film discussion.

Passing, the play, is inspired by the true story of Minerva Roulhac who was adopted by a former slave and raised as black. Minerva raised eight children (all college-educated) and lived to be nearly 100 years old; her story confronts issues of race, identity, ethnicity, complexion, class and interracial relationships.
Passing had a sold-out run Off-Broadway in Manhattan's theater district. This production stars Detroit's own Mayowa Reynolds.
